Hallewell Publications is a small, independent Scottish publisher based in Argyll. We concentrate mainly on publishing a popular series of walking guides and have sold approaching 1 million copies of our Pocket Walking Guides to date. The series covers most of Scotland and selected areas of England, and the 1300 routes currently described and mapped in these guides should give walkers a good introduction to each area.
The guides are small (A6) and inexpensive, and feature a variety of graded walks to ensure there is something for walkers of all abilities. In addition, the books are regularly rewalked to ensure that the route descriptions (in the new editions) are as up to date as possible.
There are excellent walks in virtually every corner of the country, and with the current interest in staycations the series is well placed to help readers make the most of their time outdoors.
Ka, the Ring and the Raven is a beautifully written fable about a jackdaw excluded from his flock, who flies North in search of the mythical Old Raven.
The author Richard Halliwell, known for his pocket walking guides, takes the reader on a journey through the varied landscapes of the British countryside. From a village churchyard, through broadleaf woodlands, past sea cliffs and up to the snow-capped mountains, and back again, Ka encounters several other crow species and a few potential predators. His adventure teaches him much about the nature of family, relationships and responsibility.
The book is illustrated throughout with Rebecca Coope’s pen and ink drawings making it a truly delightful read for children and adults of all ages.
