The Ultimate Book Show with Thando Mgqolozana
A decade ago, an emerging star of South African writing visited our Book Festival in Edinburgh to discuss his powerful novel A Man Who is Not A Man, at that time published only in a South African edition. Since then, Thando Mgqolozana has founded the Abantu Book Festival from Soweto, growing it into a hugely influential literary phenomenon that celebrates Black writers from across the continent. We are thrilled to welcome Mgqolozana back to the Festival to discuss his latest project: a series of 50-minute TV documentaries filmed in Cape Town and presented by Sihle-isipho Nontshokweni, featuring in-depth interviews with leading Black writers.
Today, we proudly present the first international screening of The Ultimate Book Show, followed by a live online discussion with Mgqolozana and Nontshokweni about the philosophy behind the Abantu Book Festival. What’s more, ten years after his original appearance, Mgqolozana’s debut novel will finally be published worldwide this summer. He talks about the book and his subsequent work in this celebration of South Africa’s vibrant literary scene.
